Dock 4 swaps batteries in 25 seconds. Now there are three of them to look after.

DJI's Dock 4 and Matrice 5TD launched today. The headline is a 25-second battery swap and a 45-second turnaround. The detail that matters to an operator is that each dock now holds up to three batteries, each with its own cycle count, and all of them sitting in the same cabinet. Here is what changes for UK dock operators.

One pilot, eighty drones. So who is watching the dock?

At DroneX, a NATS panel put the CAA, DfT, Wing, Manna, BT and the Met Police on one stage. Two remarks matter most to dock operators: one pilot is now supervising many aircraft, and unit economics decide who survives. Both lead to the same place, which is a dock that has to look after itself and prove it did.

British Transport Police go routine BVLOS. Seven boxes, 20,000 miles.

British Transport Police is the first UK force to fly BVLOS as part of routine operations, launching drones from drone-in-a-box stations beside the railway and flying them from London Bridge. Seven docks are live now and 14 more are planned. The headline is the aircraft, but the real test is keeping a national network of unattended docks ready to launch.

FlybyOps and the BVLOS stack: managing the operation is one half. Witnessing it is the other.

Finland's FlybyOps has launched an enterprise platform for running large-scale BVLOS programmes — approvals, personnel, procedures, auditable workflow. Third piece of the industrialising compliance stack in a month. And it sharpens a distinction every scaled operator ends up needing.

Swedish police get 24/7 BVLOS. Now their records are the runway.

Sweden's Transport Agency has approved round-the-clock police BVLOS over Norrköping — a first — with Stockholm and Gothenburg next. The regulator says it will assess outcomes in the autumn. Which means the operators' records will decide how fast this expands.

The CAA just published the endgame: routine BVLOS without segregated airspace

The CAA's new Concept of Operations describes drones flying routinely alongside manned aircraft — integration instead of danger areas, phased in beyond 2028. It grants no new privileges today. What it does is tell every dock operator exactly which habits will matter.

The dock said “Normal” for twelve hours. Its own data said otherwise.

A DJI dock's climate system failed silently overnight with a drone battery inside — while its console showed Normal throughout. The same fault sixteen days earlier went unseen for a day. This time, condition monitoring caught it before lunch. The full story, with the dock's own data.

SORA is being industrialised. Good — now the other half matters more.

Dronedesk has launched automated SORA assessment — population density, risk classes and SAIL ratings computed in seconds. Genuinely good news for UK BVLOS. And it makes the operational half of the bargain, the evidence you keep after approval, the part that stands out.

DJI just signed for half of BVLOS compliance. The other half is still yours.

DJI's SAIL III declaration for the Dock 3 and Matrice 4D covers the aircraft's design. What it doesn't cover is the operator's half — the records, the maintenance evidence, the airspace context. Here's what the announcement means for UK dock operators.

The CAA wants every aircraft below 10,000 ft to broadcast its position. Dock operators should be the first to say yes.

A new CAA consultation proposes mandatory electronic conspicuity for UK aircraft below 10,000 ft. For BVLOS dock operators this is the best news of the year — and the consultation closes 22 September.

C6 class marking untethers the Matrice 4D — and quietly raises the evidence bar

The Matrice 4D's C6 class marking now covers handheld operations as well as Dock 3 deployments, opening standard-scenario BVLOS across Europe. Buried in the conditions: firmware versions, documentation and procedures the operator must evidence.
